Alex is second only to Gordie Howe in all time assists record and third in all time goal scoring (behind Jean Beliveau and Howe). He announced his retirement this year, but Detroit changed his mind and he is starting his 20th season in NHL. One of hockey’s all-time greats, Alex has won Lady Byng Trophy three times.

Alex Delvecchio’s career NHL points now place him 40th all-time. His assist total of 825 currently places him 31st but, barring any horrible injuries, Alex will be passed by Connor McDavid in 2026-27. For the Detroit Red Wings, Delvecchio sits third all-time for points behind Gordie Howe and Steve Yzerman. For assists, he is fourth behind Howe, Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom.
Delvecchio proved his was not quite ready for retirement and put up decent numbers for three more years. He did finally hang up the blades in 1973-74 after appeared in just eleven games. Alex immediately stepped behind the bench, taking over from Ted Garvin as head coach of the Red Wings.
In 1970-71, Alex had five games with 3 or more points. On November 22, 1970 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, he assisted on all four Detroit goals in a 4-2 win. Delvecchio had helpers on a pair of goals each by Frank Mahovlich and Gordie Howe.
Two of those four were scored in a span of 17 seconds in the second period. Mahovlich scored his fifth of the 1970-71 NHL season at 4:11 and Howe put in his ninth at 4:28. The trio combined for ten points and goaltender Roy Edwards was outstanding, stopping 39 of 41.
Between 1950-51 and 1973-74, Alex Delvecchio played 1,550 regular season and 121 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Detroit Red Wings. Along with his three Lady Byng wins, he also helped the Wings to three Stanley Cup championships. Delvecchio was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.
