Details
Gordie Howe would add two more Hart Trophy wins over the remainder of his career for a total of six. As for his battle with Maurice Richard as the all-time goal scoring leader, in the end it was Howe 801, Richard 544. Today on the all-time list, Gordie is third behind Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky while the Rocket is 33rd, between Michel Goulet and Stan Mikita.
Though he didn’t win the Hart Trophy in 1958-59, Howe was runner-up to Andy Bathgate of the New York Rangers. He finished fourth in the race for the Art Ross Trophy and his 32 goals tied him for sixth in the NHL with Don McKenney of the Boston Bruins.
In the overrated category of Gordie Howe Hat Tricks, Mr. Hockey did not achieve a single one in 1958-59. He was assessed just one fighting major from a tilt with Lou Fontinato on February 1, 1959 at Madison Square Garden. The Red Wings fell to the Rangers 5-4 but Gordie scored a pair of goals in the losing cause.
His best game of the season offensively was a four point night at Detroit Olympia on January 11, 1959 in a 6-6 tie with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Howe scored the game tying goal with less than three minutes remaining in the game while also assisting on two goals by Johnny Wilson and a single by Norm Ullman.
Between 1946-47 and 1979-80, Gordie Howe played 1,767 regular season and 157 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers. He also appeared in 419 regular season and 78 playoff games in the WHA between 1973-74 and 1978-79 with the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers. The four-time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
