Going into the 1957-58 NHL season, Johnny Wilson was in the midst of a consecutive game streak that would end at 580 after the completion of the 1959-60 campaign. At the time, it was an NHL record but he was quickly surpassed by Andy Hebenton and his 630 straight games.
Despite his goal scoring numbers over his two years with the Chicago Blackhawks, Wilson returned to a 12 goal output in 1957-58, the same total as his last season with the Red Wings in 1954-55.
Indeed, Johnny was part of the big July 23, 1957 trade that saw Ted Lindsay and Glenn Hall go to the Blackhawks while Hank Bassen, Forbes Kennedy and Bill Preston joined Wilson with the Red Wings. Another trade of note involving Johnny occurred on November 7, 1960 with him and Pat Hannigan going to the New York Rangers from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Eddie Shack.
Between 1949-50 and 1961-62, Johnny Wilson appeared in 688 regular season and 66 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Blackhawks, Maple Leafs and Rangers. He helped Detroit to three Stanley Cup titles in the early 1950’s.
