ERROR! Gilles is not the senior member of the new Denver squad, aka the Colorado Rockies, he is the new goaltender of the Cleveland Barons. Their were two franchises on the move prior to the 1976-77 NHL season. The California Golden Seals became the Cleveland Barons and the Kansas City Scouts became the Colorado Rockies.
Gilles Meloche was in his sixth season with the franchise that originally began in 1967-68 as the Oakland Seals. Meloche joined the California Golden Seals for the 1971-72 season. He would play in net for the Cleveland Barons during their two year stint in the NHL and then move on to the Minnesota North Stars for 1978-79 after the two teams merged. He would remain with the North Stars until the end of 1984-85.
Meloche came to the Golden Seals in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks on October 18, 1971. Going with him was Paul Shmyr with fellow goalie Gerry Desjardins heading in the other direction. Previously, the former fifth round pick by Chicago played just two games with the club during the 1970-71 season.
Gilles would appear in 788 regular season games in the National Hockey League between 1970-71 and 1987-88 with the Seals/Barons/North Stars and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
