Details

Garry Unger would go on to play 914 regular season games in a row, at the time an NHL record. Since, he has been surpassed by just Phil Kessel, Keith Yandle and Doug Jarvis. The streak began during the 1967-68 season with the Detroit Red Wings and ended during the 1979-80 season while playing for the Atlanta Flames.

On March 13, 1971, Unger tied Red Berenson‘s team record of seven points in a single game. That record remains today. In a 9-0 blowout of the Buffalo Sabres at home, Unger scored three and assisted on four for the seven points. Berenson’s record was six goals and an assist. Joe Daley was in the nets for the expansion Sabres and Unger’s final goal was into an empty net.

1972-73 was a career year for Garry with 41 goals while he would top out with 83 points a few years later in 1975-76. He would have a run of eight consecutive seasons scoring at least 30 goals. In 1973-74, nine of his 33 goals would come in just three games, recording three hat tricks.

Between 1967-68 and 1982-83, Garry Unger appeared in 1,105 regular season and 51 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Atlanta Flames, Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers.
