Details

Garry Howatt was third on the Islanders for penalty minutes in 1974-75. His 121 PIM put him just a single minute behind Bob Nystrom and 22 behind Gerry Hart. The year before, Howatt’s 204 PIM led the team and placed him fifth in the NHL, a distant 144 behind leader Dave Schultz of the Philadelphia Flyers. Garry’s career high came in 1981-82 when he sat 242 minutes playing for the Hartford Whalers.

His antics on April 17, 1980 in a game against the Boston Bruins still place Howatt tied for 13th all-time for most penalty minutes in a playoff game. In total, Garry was assessed 32 minutes and was out of the game by the end of the first period. He had an early fight with Wayne Cashman before a brawl at the end of period put him over the top. In the donnybrook, Howatt, Cashman (again), Duane Sutter, Al Secord, Mike Milbury, Bob Lorimer, Gord Lane and Stan Jonathan received fighting majors.

Ironically, Howatt is tied with that same Wayne Cashman in that category. Cashman was assessed 32 minutes in a playoff game on April 11, 1970 against the New York Rangers. Cash had two fights in the game, one against Orland Kurtenbach and the other with Bill Fairbairn. Each fight came with an extra 10 minute misconduct and he also served a minor penalty.

Between 1972-73 and 1983-84, Garry Howatt played in 720 regular season and 87 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Islanders, Whalers and New Jersey Devils. Originally a lowly tenth round pick by the Islanders, he was part of two Stanley Cup championship teams on Long Island.
