Details

1976-77 would be the pinnacle of Ace Bailey’s NHL career. With the Capitals, he would put up a career best 19 goals, 27 assists and 46 points. The following year, he would play just 40 games with Washington, his last in the NHL. He would play one more year of major league hockey in the WHA with the Edmonton Oilers in 1978-79.

Bailey was originally a prospect of the Boston Bruins and played for the club from 1968-69 until a mid 1972-73 trade sent him to the Detroit Red Wings for Gary Doak. Garnet did not play in the 1969-70 post season but appeared in 13 of Boston’s 15 games in the 1971-72 playoffs as the team captured their second Stanley Cup championship in three years. Those 13 games would be the last Ace would play in the post season. He spent eight seasons on teams like the Red Wings, Blues and Capitals that never qualified for the playoffs.

In his second year of pro hockey, 1968-69, Bailey played eight regular season and a single playoff game for the Bruins. The rest of the season was spent in the AHL with the Hershey Bears. His 24 goals and 56 points over 60 games helped the team to a first place finish in the East Division. The Bears then went on to take out the Quebec Aces in the final for the Calder Cup championship.

Between 1968-69 and 1977-78, Ace Bailey appeared in 568 regular season and 15 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Bruins, Red Wings, Blues and Capitals. He played 38 regular season and two playoff games in the WHA for the Oilers in 1978-79. It was a bit of homecoming, having played his major junior hockey for the Edmonton Oil Kings.
