Card Notes

One of the most popular players in the NHL, Ed is also highly underrated. He plays forward and defense and excels in killing penalties. Ed is always cast in the role of a “shadow” for the opposition’s best forwards.

Un des joueurs les plus populaires de la LNH, Ed est aussi sous-estimé. Il joue avant et défense et excelle durant les punitions. Ed est toujours classé comme l’ombre des meilleurs joueurs avant du côté adverse.

Details

The 1968-69 Stanley Cup playoffs saw an excellent performance by Ed Westfall as he helped the Boston Bruins to their first playoff series win since the 1957-58 NHL season. Westfall had ten points over ten games as Boston swept the Toronto Maple Leafs in the opening round before falling to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens.

Perhaps his best game of the opening round against Toronto came in a 4-3 game three win. Westfall scored the first goal of the game, short-handed, assisted by Derek Sanderson. He and Bobby Orr assisted on Sanderson’s game winning goal in the third period. In between Ed had a first period fight with Rick Ley for the Gordie Howe Hat Trick. Westfall and Eddie Shack would assist on Sanderson’s series winning goal in game four.

After winning two Stanley Cups with the Bruins, Westfall would be the fifth pick of the New York Islanders at the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft. He became the franchise’s first ever team captain and held onto that role until the end of the 1976-77 season. Clark Gillies stepped in to wear the ‘C’ in 1977-78. Ed scored the first goal in Islanders history on October 7, 1972 in a 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Flames. The goal was scored on Atlanta goalie Phil Myre.

Between 1961-62 and 1978-79, Ed Westfall appeared in 1,226 regular season and 95 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Bruins and Islanders. He was the Bill Masterton Trophy winner for the 1976-77 season. That year, despite just four minor penalties, Westfall was not in the running for the Lady Byng Trophy.
