“Steady Eddie” is what Giacomin’s Ranger teammates call him. Ed spent six years with Providence of the AHL before finally getting a big league shot, and then he reeled off five straight All-Star seasons playing almost every game.

Ed Giacomin got his start with the New York Rangers in 1965-66, appearing in 36 games, sharing duties with Cesare Maniago and Don Simmons. Giacomin won out as the number one goalie for the Blue Shirts the following year. Maniago went from 28 games in 65-66 to just 6 in 1966-67 before being picked up by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft. Simmons would play a total of 21 games with the Rangers between 1965-66 and 1968-69 before retiring.

In 1966-67, Giacomin played 68 of New York’s 70 regular season games, posting a 2.61 goals against average with nine shutouts. He was chosen as a First Team All-Star goalie and was the runner-up for the Hart Trophy behind winner Stan Mikita. He led the NHL that year in games played, wins, saves, shutouts and minutes played.

Over a five year span from 1966-67 to 1970-71, Eddie was selected First Team twice and Second team three times. He shared the Vezina Trophy with Gilles Villemure in 1970-71. In 1972-73, he lost just eleven of 43 games while putting up a 2.91 GAA with four blanks.

Over 610 career regular season games, Giacomin put up 54 shutouts, tying him with Bernie Parent for the 24th spot all-time. However, over 65 post season games, Eddie recording just a single blank. That shutout occurred on April 8, 1973 at Madison Square Garden in quarter-final game against the Boston Bruins. Ed turned away all 33 shots in a 4-0 Rangers win.

Between 1965-66 and 1977-78, Ed Giacomin played 610 regular season and 65 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987 and his jersey number 1 was retired by the Rangers in 1989.
