Playing his first full season in the NHL last year, Ed sparked Rangers to their best performance in years. He led the league in shutouts and was named first All-Star Goalie, a fitting reward for his splendid play.

In 1966-67, Ed Giacomin not only led the NHL with nine shutouts but he also led in wins, shots on goal and saves. He was the First Team All-Star goaltender and was runner-up for the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player, behind just Stan Mikita of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Again in 1967-68, Giacomin led the NHL in shutouts with eight and for the second of three consecutive seasons led the league in wins. Despite this, he was relegated to Second Team All-Star with Gump Worsley taking First Team honours.

Of his nine blanks in 1966-67, three were against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In a home-and-home between the two teams on consecutive nights, Giacomin put up nearly 85 minutes of shutout hockey. On October 22, 1966, he was put in to relieve Cesare Maniago and stopped all 17 shots put his way to finish the game. This allowed to Rangers to come back from a 3-0 deficit to earn a 4-4 tie.

On the following night at Madison Square Garden, Eddie stopped all 24 shots for the shutout. New York scored just a single goal on Johnny Bower in the 1-0 win. Wayne Hillman scored midway through the third period, assisted by Red Berenson, for the game winner.

Between 1965-66 and 1977-78, Ed Giacomin played 609 regular season and 65 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings. The 1970-71 Vezina Trophy winner was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.
