1968-69 would be the true finale as a player in the NHL for Doug Harvey. After nearly 17 full seasons as a standout in the league, he was sent to the minors by the New York Rangers early in the 1963-64 season. Over a five year span, he mostly played in the minors, resurfacing with the Blues in the 1967-68 playoffs.
The seven time winner of the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman appeared in 70 games for the Blues in 1968-69 and contributed 22 points. He would not appear in the post season as St. Louis again reached the Stanley Cup final for the second straight season.
The six time Stanley Cup champion with the Montreal Canadiens also won a Calder Cup title in 1966-67. After being sent down from the Detroit Red Wings after just two games, he helped the Pittsburgh Hornets to an AHL title in their last year of existence. The Hornets finished first overall and swept the Rochester Americans in the final for the title.
Between 1947-48 and 1968-69, Doug Harvey appeared in 1,113 regular season and 137 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973 and the Habs retired his number 2 in 1985.
