Details

Between his last game with the Boston Bruins and his first with the Detroit Red Wings, Don McKenney was involved in two trades. The first sent him from Boston to the New York Rangers on February 6, 1963 for Dean Prentice. The second occurred on February 22, 1964 when he was shipped to the Toronto Maple Leafs with Andy Bathgate for Arnie Brown, Bill Collins, Dick Duff, Bob Nevin and Rod Seiling.

He arrived in Toronto just in time to capture his only Stanley Cup championship. McKenney was a major offensive contributor in the 1964 playoffs, totaling 12 points on four goals and eight assists over 12 games.

One of those four goals was the game winner in game six of the semi-final against the Montreal Canadiens. On April 7, 1964 at Maple Leaf Gardens, Don scored his third of the playoffs at 8:59 of the second, the first goal of the game in a 3-0 Toronto victory. Allan Stanley and Dave Keon assisted and the goal was scored on Montreal goalie Charlie Hodge. This tied the series at 3-3. Toronto won game 7 to advance to the final.

His time with the Red Wings was short. McKenney played just 24 games with the club in 1965-66 before being relegated to the minors. He scored just a single goal for Detroit, ironically in a game against the Maple Leafs.

Between 1954-55 and 1967-68, Don McKenney played 798 regular season and 58 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues. He led the NHL in assists for the 1959-60 season, just one ahead of Andy Bathgate.
