Card Notes

Winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1967, Keon is one of the NHL’s smallest, but most effective players. He’s seldom noticed on the ice and carries an “underrated” tag. Swift skater and excellent forechecker. Dave has won three NHL trophies: Calder, Byng and Smythe.

Details

Dave Keon won consecutive Lady Byng Trophies in 1961-62 and 1962-63. He was also the recipient of the Paul Deneau Trophy in 1976-77 and 1977-78, the WHA’s equivalent of the Byng. Over his NHL career, Keon sat just 117 penalty minutes over 1,296 regular season games.

Despite his highest PIM total to that point of his career (12 PIM), Keon was fourth in voting for the Byng in 1968-69 behind winner Alex Delvecchio, along with Ted Hampson and Bobby Hull. Ten of those 12 minutes came as a misconduct against the Detroit Red Wings. His only minor was handed down in another match with the Wings. He also rebounded from an 11 goal campaign in 1967-68 to score 27.

Of his 27 goals in 1968-69, six were scored shorthanded. He led the NHL in that category with a 2 SHG edge over runner-up Ed Westfall of the Boston Bruins. On December 4, 1968, Keon scored a pair in a 4-2 road win over the Minnesota North Stars. His second of the game, put past Minnesota goalie Cesare Maniago, assisted by Pierre Pilote, was scored on the penalty kill and served as the game winner.

Between 1960-61 and 1981-82, Dave Keon played 1,296 regular season and 92 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Hartford Whalers. He also appeared in 301 regular season and 36 playoff games in the WHA between 1975-76 and 1978-79 with the Minnesota Fighting Saints, Indianapolis Racers and New England Whalers. The four-time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986.
