Details

By 1976-77, Danny Grant’s NHL career was in an injury-fueled freefall. He would appear in only 42 games for the Detroit Red Wings that season, scoring just two goals. Over the next three campaigns, he would not get past 41 games in a season before calling it a career.

Grant won the Calder Trophy in 1968-69 while scoring 34 goals with the Minnesota North Stars. Danny beat out Norm Ferguson of the Oakland Seals by a very slim margin to take the award. Interestingly, both Grant and Ferguson are from Canada’s Maritime provinces with Danny from New Brunswick and Ferguson from Cape Breton in Nova Scotia.

In 1974-75, Grant showed signs of offensive brilliance with 50 goals for the Red Wings, playing alongside Marcel Dionne. Danny was fourth in goal scoring that year, 11 behind leader Phil Esposito with Guy Lafleur and Rick Martin sandwiched in between. Three of those 50 came in a February 14, 1975 game at Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver. His 33rd, 34th and 35th of the season on goalie Gary Smith couldn’t help the Wings get the win, falling 5-4 to the Canucks. Andre Boudrias had a four point night for Vancouver in the win.

Between 1965-66 and 1978-79, Danny Grant appeared in 736 regular season and 43 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota North Stars, Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings. He shared the captaincy with Detroit in 1975-76 with Terry Harper and in 1976-77 with Dennis Polonich.
