When Provost joined the Canadiens two seasons back, the dearth of strong checking left wingers on the team saw him switched from his normal right side, to the left. He played almost exclusively at left wing his first year and handling a strange position in his rookie year, came up with a very creditable showing. Last year, Claude was moved back to right wing and at times it seemed as though he had to learn all over again to play on the right side.

1957-58 brought improved numbers and he seemed to settle in to the Montreal Canadiens system quite nicely. His goal total was up slightly but he more than doubled up on assists over the previous season. he moved to fourth on the Habs in overall scoring with 51 points, behind just Dickie Moore, Henri Richard and Jean Beliveau. He also made NHL history, setting the record for fastest goal to start a NHL period, a record that still stands today (see Facebook post below for more details).
In his first five seasons in the NHL, he was a Stanley Cup champion with the Canadiens. Claude would be part of four more championships with the team for a total of nine. He is the only player in history with nine Stanley Cup rings who is not in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Between 1955-56 and 1969-70, Claude Provost appeared in 1,005 regular season and 126 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. An excellent checker, Provost could provide offense, as well. He had three seasons with 20 or more goals and topped out with a career high 33 in 1961-62, finishing tied for second in the NHL that year with Gordie Howe and Frank Mahovlich.
