Chris joined the Canadiens after competing in the 1984 Winter Olympics for the U.S. He played 12 regular season games before establishing himself in the playoffs, ending up as Montreal’s 2nd leading scorer. Represented U.S. again in the Canada Cup tournament.

In the 1983-84 Stanley Cup playoffs, Chris Chelios scored one goal and added nine assists for ten points over 15 games. Mats Naslund led the Habs with 14 points while Steve Shutt led with seven goals. The Canadiens finished the regular season below .500 but upset the Boston Bruins in a three game sweep before taking out the Quebec Nordiques in six game. Montreal finally fell to the New York Islanders in the semi-final.

At the 1984 Canada Cup, Chelios contributed two assists over six games for the United States. After finishing second in the round robin, the U.S. lost to Sweden in the semi-final. Sweden was swept by Canada in the best of three final.

His official rookie season was 1984-85 and Chris scored nine for the Habs while assisting on 55 for 64 points. He finished second to just Mario Lemieux in the voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.

The three time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defenseman won three Stanley Cup championships, one with Montreal and two with the Detroit Red Wings. Between 1983-84 and 2009-10, Chris Chelios played 1,651 regular season and 266 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and Atlanta Thrashers.

Chelios was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013 and the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2018. In February, 2024, the Chicago Blackhawks retired his jersey number 7.
