Details

1978-79 was the final full season Butch Goring would play with the Los Angeles Kings. Near the end of the 1979-80 season, his NHL career would have quite a change in direction. On March 10, 1980, Goring was traded to the New York Islanders for Billy Harris and Dave Lewis. A few months later, he was wearing his first of four Stanley Cup rings.

However, 1978-79 turned out to be the best offensive output of Butch’s career. He totaled 87 points on 36 goals and 51 assists for the Bob Berry coached Kings. He was third on the team in scoring behind Marcel Dionne (130 points) and Dave Taylor (91 points).

The fifth round pick of the Kings at the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft had a taste of winning in 1970-71 with the Springfield Kings in the American Hockey League. Goring had an amazing eleven goals and 25 points over 12 playoff games as the Kings captured the Calder Cup, taking out the Providence Reds in the final. Springfield had barely squeaked into the playoffs, finishing six games below .500 during the regular season.

In 1979-80, Butch looked to be the missing piece of the puzzle on Long Island. The team won the Stanley Cup in his first four years with the club and lost in the final in his fifth and final full season with the Islanders. Goring was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1980-81.

Butch took his winning ways behind the bench after he retired as a player. In the IHL, he coached the Denver/Utah Grizzlies to consecutive Turner Cup championships in 1994-95 and 1995-96. He was also head coach for Krefeld Pinguine in Germany’s DEL during their championship run in 2002-03.

Between 1969-70 and 1984-85, Butch Goring appeared in 1,107 regular season and 134 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Kings, Islanders and Boston Bruins. His jersey number 91 was retired by the Islanders in 2020.
