Details

On January 9, 1971, Brian Spencer and Dave Keon provided all the scoring for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Maple Leaf Gardens. For Spinner, these were just his 2nd, 3rd and 4th goals of his young NHL career.

Brian scored the first two goals of the game in the first period and made the game 4-0 in the second with his hat trick goal. Two of the three markers were assisted by Darryl Sittler. Spencer had five shots on Pittsburgh goalie Al Smith. In the Toronto nets, Jacques Plante was vintage with 37 saves on 39 shots.

Spencer would appear in 36 games for the Buds in 1971-72, his last action with the club. Over that time, he scored just a single goal. Brian was the 17th overall pick at the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft, going to the New York Islanders. With the Isles, he would immediately get a regular role, appearing in all of the club’s 78 games while contributing 14 goals and 38 points.

Between 1969-70 and 1978-79, Brian Spencer played 553 regular season and 37 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins. He reached the Stanley Cup final in 1974-75 with the Sabres with the team ultimately falling to the Philadelphia Flyers.
