Details

Bobby Sheehan is shown as a member of the Minnesota North Stars on the front of this 1978-79 O-Pee-Chee hockey card. However, he would never play for the club. In 1978-79, Sheehan played the regular season in the AHL with the New Haven Nighthawks. He had a decent campaign with 33 goals and 48 assists for 81 points, finishing tied for fourth in overall scoring.

The Nighthawks would go all the way to the Calder Cup final but Sheehan was not in the lineup. Instead, he was called up to the New York Rangers and appeared in 15 games for the Blue Shirts in their run to the Stanley Cup final (losing to the Montreal Canadiens).

What the back of card doesn’t show is that Bobby played in the WHA for parts of four seasons, including 1977-78. He played for the New York Raiders / Blades in 1972-73 and part of 1973-74 before being sent to the Edmonton Oilers. He played the full 1974-75 season with the Oilers before returning to the NHL. He appeared in 29 games with the Indianapolis Racers in 1977-78.

Bobby started his National Hockey League career with a bang as a member of the Montreal Canadiens in 1969-70 and 1970-71. Despite seldom playing for the club, he had moments of explosive offense. We cover his early days with the Habs more in the “Card Notes” for the Bobby Sheehan 1973-74 Quaker Oats hockey card.

Sheehan played one year of OHA Junior A hockey prior to becoming a third round pick by Montreal at the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft. In 1968-69, he scored 44 goals in 44 games for the St. Catharines Black Hawks, playing alongside Marcel Dionne. That total was good for fifth in the league.

The California Golden Seals picked up Bobby prior to the start of the 1971-72 NHL season. With the Seals, Sheehan got put into a regular role, appearing in all of the team’s 78 regular season games. He was second on the team with 20 goals and 46 points, one point ahead of St. Catharines teammate Dick Redmond.

In all, Sheehan appeared in 310 regular season and 25 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1969-70 and 1981-82 with the Canadiens, Golden Seals, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Kings.
