Drafted first by Philadelphia last season, Bernie Parent came through in spades as he and fellow goalie Doug Favell led the Flyers to the West Division championship. Bernie’s a product of the Boston organization.

In 1967-68, the inaugural National Hockey League season for the Philadelphia Flyers, Bernie Parent and Doug Favell split duties pretty much right down the middle. Parent appeared in 38 games while Favell played in 37. Each had four shutouts with Doug posting a 2.27 goals against average versus the 2.48 put up by Bernie.
The Flyers won the expansion team heavy West Division with just 31 wins and 73 points over 74 games. Their 179 goals against was the third lowest in the league. Montreal led the way, allowing just 167 while the Toronto Maple Leafs let in 176. However, the 173 goals scored by the Flyers was the second lowest in the NHL, ahead of just the Oakland Seals.
The defensive minded play of the Flyers helped Doug Favell to be third in voting for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year, behind Derek Sanderson and Jacques Lemaire. Bernie Parent was in a similar situation in 1965-66 with the Boston Bruins. That year, Bernie was fourth in Calder voting behind Brit Selby, Bert Marshall and Gilles Marotte.
Parent went on to play 608 regular season games in the National Hockey League between 1965-66 and 1978-79 with the Bruins, Flyers and Maple Leafs. He posted a career 2.55 goals against average with 54 shutouts. Bernie was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.
