Details

Barry Pederson was a standout with the Victoria Cougars in his last two years of junior hockey. In 1979-80, he finished third with 140 points, 30 behind leader Doug Wickenheiser. He helped the Cougars reach the final before falling to Wickenheiser’s Regina Pats.

In his senior year, 1980-81, he upped his numbers to 65 goals and 147 points despite playing just 55 of his team’s 72 games, again finishing third in the scoring race. The Cougars were dominant, winning 60 of 72 games and beating the Calgary Wranglers for the WHL championship. Grant Fuhr starred in goal for Victoria. He scored four goals in four games at the Memorial Cup tournament but the team couldn’t get past the Cornwall Royals, led by Dale Hawerchuk and Doug Gilmour.

Pederson excelled in his rookie 1981-82 NHL season after being taken in the first round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. Barry scored 44 goals and assisted on 48 for 92 points. He was runner-up for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year behind Hawerchuk and just ahead of Fuhr and Neal Broten.

Between 1980-81 and 1991-92, Barry Pederson played 70 regular season and 34 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins and Hartford Whalers. He twice surpassed the 100 point plateau, putting up a career best 116 with the Bruins in 1983-84.
