Details

His 183 points with the Cornwall Royals in 1980-81 came off 81 goals and 102 assists over 72 regular season QMJHL games. He led the league in all three categories while helping the Royals to their second consecutive President’s Trophy championship, as well as, their second Memorial Cup championship.

His performance in junior made the decision easy for the Winnipeg Jets to select him first overall at the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He didn’t disappoint. His 103 points in his rookie year in the NHL made him a easy pick for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year.

1982-83 brought a slight sophomore jinx to Hawerchuk. His point production dropped to a mere 91. However, he would bounce back with five consecutive seasons with at least 100 points. He topped the 50 goal plateau once with 53 in 1984-85. That was a career year with Dale reaching 130 points, good enough for third in the league behind Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri.

Between 1981-82 and 1996-97, Dale played in 1,188 regular season and 97 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Jets, Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.

Hawerchuk holds the distinction of being the only player in NHL history to have five assists in a single period. On March 6, 1984, the Jets were on the road playing the Los Angeles Kings at the Great Western Forum. Winnipeg exploded for five goals in the second period with Dale assisting on all. Two were scored by Paul MacLean, two were scored by Morris Lukowich and one was put in by Wade Campbell. The Jets won the game 7-3 while Markus Mattsson was in net for the Kings.
