Details
This 1968-69 O-Pee-Chee Barclay Plager card is considered an uncorrected error. The photo on the front is, in fact, not Barclay Plager. It is close, though, being a head shot of brother Bob Plager. Bob’s hockey card from the same set shows the same exact photo.
Not only did Barclay’s two brothers play in the NHL but the trio were teammates on the St. Louis Blues. Bob Plager played in the NHL from 1964-65 to 1977-78 with the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues. Bill Plager played NHL hockey between 1967-68 and 1975-76 with the Minnesota North Stars, the Blues and Atlanta Flames.
No stranger to the penalty box, Barclay’s 153 PIM over just 49 games in his rookie 1967-68 NHL season led the league. He had a three minute edge over runner-up Don Awrey how had the benefit of a full 74 game schedule.
Despite being a defenseman who scored a total of 44 regular season goals over his NHL career, Plager achieved a Gordie Howe Hat Trick during the 1971-72 NHL season. On December 10, 1971 against the California Golden Seals at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena, Plager scored his fifth goal of the campaign, unassisted on Gilles Meloche. He later assisted on the game tying goal by Mike Murphy before dropping the gloves with Gerry Pinder.
Between 1967-68 and 1976-77, Barclay Plager played 614 regular season and 68 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Blues. Following his retirement as a player, he carried on in coaching roles with the organization up until his death in 1988.
