Hitting is what Bob Plager does best, and he’s one of the most feared bodycheckers in the NHL. He and his two brothers, who are also with St. Louis, have never backed away from a fight. Easy going and often injured.

Details

The 1967-68 Stanley Cup playoffs for the St. Louis Blues served as a preview for the movie Slap Shot that would come out a better part of a decade later. Brothers Bob and Barclay Plager were nothing short of nasty over the team’s 18 game run to the Stanley Cup final in their inaugural NHL season.

While ousting the Philadelphia Flyers and Minnesota North Stars before being swept in the final by the Montreal Canadiens, Bob sat 69 penalty minutes while Barclay accumulated 73. Interestingly, they met up with their other brother Bill Plager in the second round with Billy playing with the North Stars. He was much tamer with just four minor penalties over 12 games.

Bob Plager’s NHL career began with the New York Rangers, playing sparingly from 1964-65 to 1966-67, appearing in a total of 29 games. He came to the Blues via a June 6, 1967 trade that also saw Tim Ecclestone, Gord Kannegiesser and Gary Sabourin head to Missouri in exchange for Rod Seiling. Bob would spend the rest of his NHL career in St. Louis.

Between 1964-65 and 1977-78, Bob Plager appeared in 644 regular season and 44 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers and Blues. He led the AHL in PIM in 1966-67 with 169 playing for the Baltimore Clippers, 16 more than second place Don Awrey.
