Card Notes

“Brownie” came on strong last season and established a name for himself. He’s a top rusher and good puck carrier. The Rangers got him in the big deal for then captain Andy Bathgate in 1964. A rolling hip check is one of Arnie’s favourite tricks.

Details

The “Big Deal” the back of this 1968-69 O-Pee-Chee hockey card refers to happened on February 22, 1964. Arnie Brown, along with Bill Collins, Dick Duff, Bob Nevin and Rod Seiling were traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the New York Rangers for Andy Bathgate and Don McKenney.

With the Maple Leafs, Brown saw limited action, appearing in just six games over a three year span. He was put into a regular role upon arrival in the Big Apple and never looked back at the minors.

The blue liner’s best offensive season came in 1969-70 when he scored 15 goals and totaled 36 points. Although a steady defenseman, Arnie was only considered for the Norris Trophy once and that was in the form of just a single vote in 1966-67.

Perhaps his best game of the 1969-70 NHL season came on the night of April 5, 1970 in a 9-5 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Madison Square Garden. Brown had a four point night on four assists. The defenseman set up goals by Rod Gilbert, Jack Egers, Dave Balon and Ron Stewart. The Rangers fired a massive 65 shots on Detroit goalie Roger Crozier with Rod Gilbert accounting for 12.

Between 1961-62 and 1973-74, Arnie Brown appeared in 681 regular season and 22 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, New York Islanders and Atlanta Flames. He went on to play two years in the WHA with the Vancouver Blazers and Michigan Stags.
