Card Notes

Roy is an often underrated goalie because he does not have a spectacular style. He retired after the 1970-71 season, but came back for Pittsburgh the following year, and was eventually sold back to Detroit.

En Français

Comme son style n’est pas spectaculaire, Roy est souvent sous-estimé. Il prit sa retraite après la saison 1970-71, mais revint pour Pittsburgh l’année suivante et fut éventuellement revendu aux Red Wings.

Details

1973-74 would be the end of the line for Roy Edwards in his NHL career. He appeared in four games for the Detroit Red Wings before retiring. The Wings didn’t win in any of the four and Roy was pulled in two. Edwards allowed 18 goals over those four games.

However, the year before, 1972-73, Roy tied for the NHL lead in shutouts with six, equaling Ken Dryden of the Montreal Canadiens. The six blanks doubled his career total and he finished his career with 12.

Originally in the Chicago Blackhawks system, Edwards got his NHL start at 30 years old, playing for Detroit in 1967-68. Between 1967-68 and 1973-74, he played 236 regular season and four playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins. Between 1957-58 and 1966-67, Roy was well-traveled, playing for eight different minor pro teams across five teams.
