Details
Though he continued playing for more than a decade, that 1958-59 NHL season was the offensive pinnacle of Andy Bathgate’s career. On a Rangers team that missed the Stanley Cup playoffs by a single point, Bathgate was third in goal scoring (40), second in assists (48) and third in the race for the Art Ross Trophy (88), eight points behind leader Dickie Moore of the Montreal Canadiens.
Andy had a five point game on November 19, 1958 in a 7-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Madison Square Garden. He scored a single goal, his 12th of the season, assisted by Larry Popein and Bill Gadsby. Bathgate also assisted on all four goals scored by Dean Prentice in the game.
Unfortunately, in the 70th and last game of the season for Bathgate and the Rangers, Andy was left off the scoresheet in a 4-2 home loss to the Montreal Canadiens. A win would have put them a single point ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs and a berth in the post season. New York had a tough month of March, going 3-6-1, including a pair of losses and a tie with Toronto.
Between 1952-53 and 1970-71, Andy Bathgate played 1,069 regular season and 54 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins. He arrived in Toronto just in time to win a Stanley Cup in 1963-64. Bathgate also appeared in eleven WHA games in 1974-75 with the Vancouver Blazers.
