Details

Yvon Labre would play just 22 games for the Washington Capitals in 1977-78 and never really put in another full NHL season again. He would continue on with the Capitals until 1980-81, serving as captain for a few years and having his jersey number 7 retired by the team.

Labre did score the first goal in Washington Capitals franchise history. In the team’s first game, played at home on October 15, 1974, Yvon scored the lone goal in a 1-1 tie with the Los Angeles Kings. At 4:35 of the second period, he put one past Rogie Vachon, assisted by Dave Kryskow and Bill Lesuk to put the Caps up 1-0. Dan Maloney, with help from Terry Harper, tied the score later in the period.

It was just Labre’s third of 14 total goals scored in the NHL. Amazingly, two of the three goals he scored during the 1976-77 NHL season were on the penalty kill. On January 11, 1977 in a 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins, he scored shorthanded on Gerry Cheevers in a 3-2 loss.

On March 29, 1977 in a 6-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings, Yvon scored on Jim Rutherford at 1:12 of the second period, assisted by goaltender Bernie Wolfe with Bob Paradise in the box, to make the score 3-0.

Originally a prospect of the Pittsburgh Penguins after playing major junior for the Toronto Marlboros, Yvon Labre played 371 regular season games in the National Hockey League between 1970-71 and 1980-81 with the Penguins and Capitals. Like Guy Charron, another player who spent much of his career with the Capitals in the early days of the franchise, Labre did not appear in a Stanley Cup playoff game.
