Audio Version:
Yvan may be the fastest man on skates in the NHL. His elusive style is considered the most dangerous breakaway threat in the league. A power play specialist, he was Montreal’s top goal-getter last season scoring 10 of his goals when the Canadiens had a man advantage. Yvan could be the next NHLer to get 50 goals in a season and will pass the 300 goal plateau this season.
Details
Some sloppy work by O-Pee-Chee on the back of this 1974-75 Yvan Cournoyer hockey card. He will pass the 300 goal plateau this season is pretty obvious since the Roadrunner went into 1974-75 with 316.
As far as becoming a 50 goal scorer, he would not. The closest Cournoyer came to the milestone was in 1971-72 when he scored 47. He reached the 40 goal plateau four times over his career but the fact the he only played one full season schedule (76 games in 1968-69) hindered his chances on bigger numbers.
His most impressive performance came in the 1972-73 playoffs. Over 17 games, he scored 15 goals and totaled 25 points, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy while leading the Montreal Canadiens to a Stanley Cup championship.
Rarely in the penalty box, especially during the post season, Yvan never got much consideration for the Lady Byng Trophy. His lone appearance in the top 5 for voting on the award came in 1971-72 when he was fifth.
Between 1963-64 and 1978-79, Yvan Cournoyer appeared in 968 regular season and 147 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. The ten time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.
