Details

Yvan Cournoyer’s 15 goals in the 1972-73 Stanley Cup playoffs still rank him tied for 18th all-time with several players, including Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Wayne Gretzky and more (most recently Sam Bennett). The record now belongs to Reg Leach with his 19 goals in just 16 games in 1975-76. Jari Kurri equaled that mark in 1984-85, playing two more games.

The Roadrunner did indeed score number 300 in the 1973-74 NHL season. On January 5, 1974, the Canadiens hosted the Vancouver Canucks at the Montreal Forum. At 6:51 of the second period, Cournoyer scored his 24th of the season and 300th regular season goal of his NHL career on the power play. The goal was scored on Gary Smith and assisted by Frank Mahovlich and Pete Mahovlich.

When all was said and done, Yvan recorded 428 goals and 863 points in the regular season along with 64 and 127 in the playoffs. For 12 consecutive seasons from 1966-67 to 1977-78, Cournoyer scored at least 24 goals. He surpassed 40 goals on four occasions, topping out with a career high 47 in 1971-72.

Between 1963-64 and 1978-79, Yvan Cournoyer played 968 regular season and 147 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. The 1972-73 Conn Smythe Trophy winner was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.
