For 1978-79, Wayne Thomas and John Davidson would switch roles with the New York Rangers with Davidson taking over the number one spot. It was the start of the end for Wayne’s NHL career, appearing in 31 games before playing just 22 over the next two campaigns before his career came to an end.
By far, his best year in the National Hockey League came in 1975-76. Thomas appeared in 64 regular season games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, posting a 3.19 goals against average with two shutouts. He played in all ten Stanley Cup playoff games for the Buds as the team beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in the opening round before falling to the Philadelphia Flyers in the following series.
Thomas faced 40 or more shots in nine games during the 1975-76 NHL season and came out with an impressive 4-3-2 record. He made 43 saves in a 4-1 win over the New York Rangers on October 18, 1975 at Maple Leaf Gardens. The only puck to get by him came off the stick of Rick Middleton with help from Rod Gilbert and Steve Vickers. The Maple Leafs were down two men at the time with both Rod Seiling and Borje Salming in the penalty box.
Wayne Thomas appeared in 243 regular season and 15 playoff games in the NHL between 1971-72 and 1980-81 with the Montreal Canadiens, Maple Leafs and Rangers. He posted a 3.34 career GAA with ten shutouts.
