Details

Vic Hadfield was named team captain for the New York Rangers prior to the 1971-72 NHL season. Bob Nevin had worn the “C” for the Blue Shirts since 1965-66 but was off to the Minnesota North Stars following the 1970-71 season. Hadfield would remain captain until he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins after the 1973-74 season. Brad Park took over the role for 1974-75.

1971-72 was a career year for Vic. He scored 50 goals and assisted on 56 for 106 points. It made him the first player in Rangers history to reach the 50 goal plateau. It also made him just the sixth different player in NHL history to reach the milestone. Since, just three other New York players have topped the 50 goal mark: Adam Graves, Jaromir Jagr and Chris Kreider.

That year, he tied Bobby Hull of the Chicago Blackhawks for second in NHL goal scoring, 16 behind leader Phil Esposito of the Boston Bruins. In the race for the Art Ross Trophy, he was fourth behind Esposito, Bobby Orr and Jean Ratelle.

Between 1961-62 and 1976-77, Hadfield appeared in 1,002 regular season and 74 Stanley Cup playoff games with the Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins. His jersey number 11 was retired by the Rangers in 2018.
