It was a bit of a slow start for the NHL career of Vic Hadfield but once the ball was rolling he was unstoppable. After a year in the AHL with the Buffalo Bisons, affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks, Hadfield was picked up by the New York Rangers for the 1961-62 season. However, he wasn’t truly a full time player with the Blue Shirts until 1963-64.

Hadfield’s career best came in 1971-72 when he became the first Ranger to score 50 goals. At the time, only five others in the history of the NHL had accomplished the feat. That year, he tied Bobby Hull for second in the NHL, 16 goals behind leader Phil Esposito.

In 1963-64, Hadfield led the NHL with 151 penalty minutes. It was a tight race for the leader of the sin bin with Terry Harper finishing just two minutes behind and Stan Mikita three minutes behind Harper. It was a career high for Vic but he did come close in 1971-72 with 142 PIM.

Between 1961-62 and 1976-77, Vic Hadfield appeared in 1,002 regular season and 74 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins. He played two games for Canada at the 1972 Summit Series and helped the Rangers to the Stanley Cup final in 1971-72, losing out to Bobby Orr and the Boston Bruins.
