Details

After playing with the Boston Bruins for eight seasons, Tommy Williams was traded to the Minnesota North Stars on May 7, 1969 with Barry Gibbs for Fred O’Donnell and Don Tannahill. After appearing in just 26 games for the Bruins in 1968-69, Williams had a career year with the North Stars in 1969-70.

His 52 assists led the team and his 67 points were second, five behind team leader J.P. Parise. He was third for helpers in the NHL, four behind runner-up Phil Esposito and 35 behind leader Bobby Orr, all teammates in Boston the year before.

Against his former team in 1969-70, Williams had points in each of the five games, finishing with three goals and three assists. In a 4-2 loss on February 21, 1970, Tom assisted on a J.P. Parise marker and scored his eight of the season with help from Parise and Tom Reid. Unfortunately for the North Stars, Gerry Cheevers stood on his head, making 43 saves on 45 shots to ensure the Boston win.

At the 1960 Olympics, held at Squaw Valley, California, Williams contributed ten points in seven games for the United States. The U.S. won gold in what is known as the “Forgotten Miracle On Ice”. The team was led by the goaltending of Jack McCartan.

Between 1961-62 and 1975-76, Tommy Williams played 663 regular season and ten playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Minnesota North Stars, California Golden Seals and Washington Capitals. He also appeared in 139 regular season and 19 playoff games in the WHA with the New England Whalers (1972-73, 1973-74), winning an Avco World Trophy with the team.
