Card Notes
Tim may be the first player in history to announce “retirement” after making the first All-Star team as he did last season. His slap shot is one of the hardest in the NHL, as are his bodychecks. You can’t call him “Tiny” Tim.
Details
But, Tim Horton did retire after the 1968-69 NHL season, as the back of this 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee hockey card was suggesting. He started 1969-70 business as usual with the Toronto Maple Leafs. On March 3, 1970, after 59 games with the Leafs, Horton was traded to the New York Rangers for future considerations that turned out to be Denis Dupere.
In 1968-69, Horton put up a career high 40 points on eleven goals and 29 assists. Though never a Norris Trophy winner, this was the second time that he was runner-up. In 1963-64, he finished second in voting behind Pierre Pilote of the Chicago Blackhawks and in 1968-69, he was behind, of course, Bobby Orr.
Included in his 40 points that year were a pair of three-point games. On March 6, 1969, despite being on the losing end of a 5-3 score to the Canadiens at the Montreal Forum, Horton was in on all three Toronto markers. He opened the scoring at 10:53 of the first period, putting his tenth of the campaign past Montreal goalie Gump Worsley with help from Murray Oliver and Mike Walton. He also assisted on goals by Ron Ellis and Paul Henderson.
Between 1949-50 and 1973-74, Tim Horton played 1,445 regular season and 126 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. The four-time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.
