Details

1963-64 was a big year for Tim Horton and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team captured their third consecutive Stanley Cup championship, beating the Detroit Red Wings in the final. The Leafs finished third during the regular season while the Wings were fourth. Each series of the 1963-64 Stanley Cup playoffs went the full seven games.

On an individual level, Horton set an NHL record for most game winning goals by a defenseman with seven, while only scoring a total of nine. That record has since been broken by Oliver Ekman-Larsson of the Arizona Coyotes but it took until 2015-16, over 50 years later.

Horton was First Team All-Star in 1963-64, alongside Pierre Pilote of the Chicago Blackhawks. He was runner-up to Pilote in voting for the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman. Never a Norris winner, it was the first of two times Tim finished second. The other was in 1968-69 when he finished a great distance behind Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins.

Between 1949-50 and 1973-74, Tim Horton played 1,445 regular season and 126 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. He won four Stanley Cup championships with the Leafs and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.
