Card Notes

Leafs’ razzle-dazzle defenseman, considered by experts to one of the coming “greats” of the game. On a number of occasions, Tim has taken the puck from behind his own net, stickhandled his way right up the ice, slipped past the opposing defense and scored in a manner reminiscent of the great Eddie Shore. His offensive play outshines his defensive work.

Details

1954-55 was Tim Horton’s third full season on the blue line for the Toronto Maple Leafs. His offensive numbers dropped from the previous season when he lead the team’s defensemen with 31 points. 1953-54 marked his first Second Team All-Star selection. Over his lengthy NHL career, Horton would be a First Team All-Star three times and a Second Team All-Star three times, as well.

For the 1954-55 season, his numbers fell to just 14 points on five goals and nine assists. Three of those 14 points came in one game. On December 15, 1954, the Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs at the St. Louis Arena. That year, the Hawks had eight of their home games played at neutral sites throughout the midwest.

In an 8-3 win, Horton contributed a goal and two assists. His second period goal, assisted by Eric Nesterenko and Ted Kennedy, turned out to be the game winner. He assisted on two of Sid Smith’s three goals. Kennedy had four assists in the game as the Leafs pummeled Chicago goalie Al Rollins.

Between 1949-50 and 1973-74, Tim Horton appeared in 1,445 regular season and 126 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.
