Terry is starting his 11th season in the NHL and has played all but two seasons with Detroit. He played for Boston in 1955-56 and 1956-57. Rated as one of the greatest goalies in modern hockey. Sawchuk was a member of the first All-Star Team on three occasions and was a member of the Second Team three times. He won the Vezina Trophy as “the goalkeeper who has played the most games for the team with the fewest goals scored against it” three times.

The Detroit Red Wings traded Terry Sawchuk to the Boston Bruins on June 3, 1955, along with Marcel Bonin, Lorne Davis and Vic Stasiuk for Gilles Boisvert, Real Chevrefils, Norm Corcoran, Warren Godfrey and Ed Sanford. Two years later, the Bruins shipped Sawchuk back to Motown, in exchange for a young John Bucyk.
In 1960-61, Terry would share time between the pipes during the regular season with Hank Bassen. The Red Wings, under head coach Sid Abel, finished below .500 and in the fourth and final playoff position. Despite ending the regular season 26 points behind the first place Montreal Canadiens, Detroit reached the Stanley Cup final before bowing to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.
The back of this 1960-61 Parkhurst hockey card mentions Sawchuk’s three Vezina Trophy wins. He would win one more during his National Hockey League career, in 1964-65 with the Red Wings. His days as a First Team All-Star were done by the time this card came out but he would be selected to the Second Team one more time, in 1962-63.
A four time Stanley Cup champion (with Detroit three times and with Toronto once), Terry Sawchuk played in 971 regular season and 106 playoff games in the NHL between 1949-50 and 1969-70 with the Red Wings, Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers. He was inducted posthumously into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1971 and his jersey number 1 was retired by the Red Wings in 1994.
