The comeback of Ted Lindsay, after four years of retirement, is one of the NHL’s most dramatic stories. Ted scored 365 goals in big league career with Wings and Hawks, most by any left winger, before resuming active play.

Ted Lindsay wanted to finish his NHL career in the jersey of the Detroit Red Wings and he did just that. Lindsay’s comeback would last for one season, just 1964-65. However, he missed just one regular season game and scored 14 goals, totaling 28 points. His 173 penalty minutes were just four behind league leader Carl Brewer of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He helped the Wings to a first place overall finish during the regular season, four points ahead of the second place Montreal Canadiens. Unfortunately, Detroit was bounced in the first round of the playoffs by the Chicago Blackhawks with the series going the full seven games. The Red Wings held a 3-2 lead in the set but couldn’t stop Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and the Hawks.
Terrible Ted played 1,068 regular season and 133 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1944-45 and 1964-65 with the Red Wings and Blackhawks. He was the Art Ross Trophy winner in 1949-50 with 78 points, a nine point cushion over teammate Sid Abel. Lindsay was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966.
