Now starting his third season in the NHL, Steve had a fabulous junior career which he starred on a line with Billy Harris and Dave Gardner. He’s a swift skater whose elusive style often baffles the opposition. Steve, who can also play center if needed, was a first round draft choice of the Canadiens in 1972, and he played only six minor league games before making the NHL.

Steve Shutt had a three year junior career in the OHA Junior A from 1969-70 to 1971-72 with the Toronto Marlboros. In 1970-71, he scored 70 goals and assisted on 53 for 123 points. Steve was one of four Marlies to top the 100 point plateau that season with Dave Gardner finishing ahead with 137 points while Steve Vickers and Gavin Kirk both contributed 107.

That year, Shutt was one goal off the league lead with Rick Martin of the Montreal Junior Canadiens taking the crown with 71. His 123 points placed him fifth in the race for the Eddie Powers Trophy, 20 points behind leader Marcel Dionne of the St. Catharines Black Hawks. Steve was named a Second Team All-Star at left wing.

In his final season with the Marlboros, 1971-72, Shutt scored 63 and assisted on 49 for 112 points over 58 games. He led Toronto in goals and was third in points on the team behind Billy Harris and Gardner, both totaling 129. Steve led the league in goal scoring with two more than second place Don Lever of the Niagara Falls Flyers. He was again fifth in overall scoring with his linemates sharing the league lead. Shutt was selected as a First Team All-Star.

Shutt was the fourth overall pick at the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft, going to the Montreal Canadiens. Ahead of him were Billy Harris, Jacques Richard and Don Lever. He went on to play 930 regular season and 99 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1972-73 and 1984-85 with the Habs and Los Angeles Kings. Steve was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.
