Details

1979-80 would turn out to be a career year offensively for Steve Payne with 85 points on 42 goals and 43 assists. He was outstanding in the playoffs with 17 goals and 29 points over 19 games, helping the Minnesota North Stars to the Stanley Cup final before falling to the New York Islanders.

His offensive skills were on full display in a December 26, 1979 home game against the Winnipeg Jets. After a scoreless first period, Payne broke things open in the second. He scored his first of the game at 1:26 and over a span of just 6:39, Steve had a hat trick and also assisted on an Al MacAdam goal. In the 6-0 win over the Jets, Payne’s first of the game and 22nd of the 1979-80 NHL season, served as the game winner.

In the opening game of the 1980 Stanley Cup playoffs, despite contributing just four of the 61 shots put toward Toronto goalie Jiri Crha, Payne had two goals and an assist in the 6-3 win for the North Stars. His second of the game, assisted by Al MacAdam and Bobby Smith, remained as the game winner.

Between 1978-79 and 1987-88, Steve Payne played 613 regular season and 71 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Minnesota North Stars. He scored no less than 23 goals in his first seven seasons but he was bitten by the injury bug in 1985-86 and never regained his scoring touch.
