Details
There is an ERROR on this 1982-83 O-Pee-Chee Steve Larmer rookie card. Larmer and Steve Ludzik were inseparable throughout much of their hockey careers. Both played OHL hockey together with the Niagara Falls Flyers from 1978-79 to 1980-81. Both were drafted by Chicago in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. Both had a year of seasoning with the New Brunswick Hawks in the AHL before starting their NHL careers with the Blackhawks. That’s why it’s almost excusable that Larmer’s photo appears in Ludzik’s card and Ludzik’s appears on Larmer’s.
In 1980-81, Larmer and Ludzik combined for 105 goals and 275 points with Niagara Falls. Interestingly, Ludzik was taken in the second round by Chicago while Larmer was passed over until the sixth.
His 90 points in his rookie campaign did place him second on the Hawks in scoring, 31 points behind team leader Denis Savard. Steve’s 43 goals were eleven behind team leader Al Secord. He dominated the Calder Trophy voting with nearly twice the votes as second place Phil Housley. Also in the running that year were Scott Stevens, Brian Bellows and Pelle Lindbergh.
Following his rookie performance, Larmer would score at least 20 goals in every season except the strike shortened 1994-95 campaign, his last in the NHL. He reached the 40 goal plateau five times and topped out with 46 in 1984-85.
Between 1980-81 and 1994-95, Steve Larmer played in 1,006 regular season and 140 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers. His streak of 884 consecutive regular season games places him sixth all-time.
