Details
It’s a head-scratcher that O-Pee-Chee could only come up with a decade old fact about Serge Savard on the back of this 1978-79 hockey card. However, Savard was the recipient of the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1968-69. In that playoff run, the second year defenseman contributed ten points in 14 games.
Much of his offense that post season came in the semi-final series against the Boston Bruins. In a game 1 3-2 win in overtime, Serge assisted on all three Montreal goals. In game 2, his first of the playoffs, scored with just over a minute left in the third period, tied the score at 3-3 and forced overtime. Savard then assisted on Mickey Redmond‘s game winner 4:55 into the extra frame.
The deciding game 6 also went into overtime and it was Savard that tied the game in the third to force extra time. In the 2-1 victory, Ron Murphy scored for the Bruins 2:29 into the game. Serge tied the score at 1:10 of the third. It was Jean Beliveau scoring the game winner at 11:28 of the second overtime period.
Between 1966-67 and 1982-83, Serge Savard played 1,040 regular season and 130 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets. The seven-time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986.
