October 8, 1983 was the season opener for the New Jersey Devils, playing on the road at Joe Louis Arena against the Detroit Red Wings. In this 6-3 Devils win, Ron Low made 26 saves on 29 shots for the win. Low’s former Edmonton Oilers teammate Eddie Mio was in net for the Wings. Mio had a rough night, allowing five goals on just 17 shots with the sixth New Jersey goal scored on an empty net.
1984-85 would be the last year in the NHL for Ron. He played 26 games for the Devils, posting a 3.85 goals against average and recording the last of his four career shutouts. On November 18, 1984, the Devils crossed the Hudson to play the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Low stopped all 35 shots in a 6-0 win. Rich Preston put up a hat trick for New Jersey.
Between 1972-73 and 1984-85, Ron Low appeared in 382 regular season and seven playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, Quebec Nordiques, Edmonton Oilers and New Jersey Devils. On February 16, 1975, Low stopped all 32 shots in a 3-0 Capitals win over the Kansas City Scouts, the first shutout in franchise history.
