Card Notes

Ron is one of the taller goalies in pro hockey and he uses his size to good advantage. He’s a standup type of goalie who likes to make the shooters make the first move before committing himself. He played more than half the 1972-73 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ron and Michel Belhumeur should battle for the number one goaltending position with the Capitals.

Details

Ron Low took the reigns as the number one goalie for the Washington Capitals right from the start in their inaugural 1974-75 NHL season. He was the second player taken in the 1974 NHL Expansion Draft with the Kansas City Scouts taking Michel Plasse first overall. Despite the beating the team took, Low played in 48 of Washington’s games in 1974-75 and was behind all the team’s eight wins.

Forever a part of Capitals history, Ron Low was between the pipes on February 16, 1975 when the first shutout was recorded for the franchise. The Caps beat the Scouts 3-0 at the Capital Center with Low stopping all 32 shots put his way. Stan Gilbertson scored the winning goal midway through the first period.

Low was in the nets for Washington’s first ever hockey game. On October 9, 1974, they started the season on the road against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The Caps came out on the losing end, falling 6-3. Ron turned away 37 of 43 shots pelted at him while Ed Giacomin had just 12 shots go his way at the other end of the ice.

Between 1972-73 and 1984-85, Ron Low played in 382 regular season and just seven Stanley Cup playoff games in the National Hockey League. He appeared with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, Quebec Nordiques, Edmonton Oilers and New Jersey Devils.
