Details
Ron Ellis would continue to be a steady goal contributor for the Toronto Maple Leafs through 1971-72, nearing his career high in 1974-75 with 32. That total was three of the number he scored in 1969-70. His 35 in 1969-70 led the Maple Leafs with a three goal edge over Dave Keon. It also placed him seventh in the NHL, eight behind leader Phil Esposito.
In 1971-72, Ellis scored 23, just one of his total from the previous season. Of those 23, seven were game winners. On November 1, 1971 in a 6-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Maple Leaf Gardens, he did not score the game winner but did put up the third of six career hat tricks.
He opened the scoring in that game with his third of the season, assisted by Norm Ullman and Jim McKenny. His second, scored on Detroit goalie Al Smith late in the second period, made the score 3-0 Toronto. His third capped a three goal flurry by the Maple Leafs in the third period with Dave Keon, Paul Henderson and Ellis scoring in a span of 3:51.
As mentioned, Ron jumped from junior hockey with the Toronto Marlboros right to the Maple Leafs with no time in the minors. In his 1964-65 rookie season, Ellis scored 25 goals for the Buds and was runner-up to Detroit goalie Roger Crozier for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.
Between 1963-64 (he appeared in a single game that year while still a junior) and 1980-81, Ron Ellis played 1,034 regular season and 70 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He helped Toronto to a Stanley Cup championship in 1966-67. He played in all eight games for Canada at the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.
