Ron Ellis definitely jumped on the scene with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1964-65, straight out of junior hockey. In his rookie season, Ron scored 23 goals and totaled 39 points in 62 games. He was second in Calder Trophy voting in a tight race with Roger Crozier of the Detroit Red Wings.
The 19 goals he scored in his sophomore 1965-66 NHL season would mark the last time until 1978-79 that he would not reach the 20 goal plateau. In fact, for ten consecutive seasons, he would scored at least 22 goals in each campaign. Ellis topped out with 35 markers in 1969-70, placing him seventh in the league that year.
In the 1966-67 playoffs, Ron scored just two goals over his team’s ten game run to the Stanley Cup championship. His second goal of the playoffs opened the scoring in game 6 and the Leafs went on to a 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens, along with capturing the Cup. The goal, scored on Habs goalie Gump Worsley, was assisted by Red Kelly and Allan Stanley.
Between 1963-64 and 1980-81, Ron Ellis appeared in 1,034 regular season and 70 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was one of just seven Canadian players to appear in all eight games of the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.
