Details

Roger Crozier had some big skates to fill going into the 1964-65 NHL season. Terry Sawchuk was off to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Crozier, with his 15 games of NHL experience, took over the number one goaltending role with the Detroit Red Wings.

He played all 70 regular season games for the Wings that year, putting up a 2.42 goals against average and six shutouts. Incredibly, three of those six shutouts came before the month of October was over. In a four game stretch between October 21 and October 29, Roger had three shutouts and allowed just a single goal in a 1-1 tie with the Montreal Canadiens. John Ferguson got the lone goal for the Habs in the game. It took until 15:11 of the third period and was on the powerplay.

Crozier earned the Calder Trophy, edging out Toronto’s Ron Ellis and was named the First Team All-Star goalie with Charlie Hodge of the Canadiens taking Second Team honours. The following year, he led the Red Wings to the Stanley Cup final and was given the Conn Smythe Trophy despite Detroit losing to the Canadiens.

Between 1963-64 and 1976-77, Roger Crozier appeared in 518 regular season and 32 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres and Washington Capitals. He was originally a prospect of the Chicago Blackhawks.
