Details
A prospect of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Rod Seiling played his first NHL game with the Buds in 1962-63 while still a junior with the Toronto Neil McNeil Maroons. It would be his last game with the club until the 1974-75 season.
On February 22, 1964, he was shipped to the New York Rangers, along with Bob Nevin, Dick Duff, Bill Collins and Arnie Brown. Going to Toronto in the trade were Andy Bathgate and Don McKenney.
He would see his first action with the Blue Shirts in 1963-64 while still a junior with the Toronto Marlboros. By the following season, he was a regular with the team and placed fourth in the voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. The award was taken by Roger Crozier of the Detroit Red Wings.
Despite his success as a rookie, 1965-66 was a bit of a sophomore jinx. Seiling played 52 games with the Rangers while also seeing time in the CPHL with the Minnesota Rangers. Most of the following season was spent in the AHL with the Baltimore Clippers.
The summer of 1967 was a bit of an oddity for Rod. He was drafted 36th overall by the St. Louis Blues at the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft. However, he was then traded back to the Rangers for Tim Ecclestone, Gord Kannegiesser, Bob Plager and Gary Sabourin. He would remain with New York until the start of 1974-75, a year spent with three teams, including the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Between 1962-63 and 1978-79, Rod Seiling appeared in 979 regular season and 77 playoff games in the National Hockey League. Along with the Maple Leafs, Rangers and Capitals, he also played for the St. Louis Blues and Atlanta Flames. Seiling played three games for Canada at the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.
