Rick was named captain of Leafs at the age of 22. He played in 1982 and 1983 NHL All-Star Games. Rick has scored over 50 goals in two of his three NHL season with Toronto.

Details

After the Vancouver Canucks selected Rick Vaive fifth overall at the 1979 NHL Entry Draft, the traded him to the Toronto Maple Leafs 47 games into the 1979-80 NHL season. On February 18, 1980, Vaive was shipped east with Bill Derlago for Tiger Williams and Jerry Butler.

Vaive continued his string of 50 goal seasons in 1983-84 with 52. He recorded four hat trick, including a four goal game in a 5-4 win over the St. Louis Blues on December 21, 1983 at Maple Leaf Gardens. Rick scored his 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th goals of the season. His fourth of the game, scored on St. Louis goalie Mike Liut at 10:15 of the third, served as the game winner.

Earlier in the month, on December 8, 1983, in an 8-6 road win over the Hartford Whalers, Vaive recorded five points on three goals and two assists. His hat trick goal held on as the game winner. All three of Rick’s goals were assisted by Dan Daoust with his linemate also recording five points on a goal and four helpers.

Between 1979-80 and 1991-92, Rick Vaive played 876 regular season and 54 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres. Along with his three 50 goal seasons, Vaive scored 30 or more in nine campaigns and scored no less than 20 in every full season he played (not including 1991-92 when he played just 20 games for the Sabres).
